Founded in 2015 in Stockholm, Sweden, Defunc specialises in the creation of audio products such as earbuds and speakers. The brand is founded on the principle of combining design with functionality, which is reflected in its name (‘design’ + ‘function’ = Defunc). Defunc aims to simplify the process of choosing audio products for consumers by focusing on purposeful design and clearly defined product functions. The company was founded by entrepreneur Johan Wahlbäck, who wanted to make it easier for consumers to navigate the complex earphone market. Defunc’s initial product range included four different earphone models, each designed for specific uses: MUSIC, TALK, SPORT and HYBRID. These models were offered at different price points to suit different budgets. Defunc’s reach has expanded significantly since its inception and it is now present in over 35 markets worldwide. The company has been recognised for its innovative approach to audio technology. A notable example is their DUO speakers, which offered unique stereo sound through two connectable Bluetooth units. In addition, their TRUE model combined earphones with a power bank, catering to the increasingly mobile lifestyles of consumers. Defunc also collaborated with gamers and engineers from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology to develop specialised MOBILE GAMING earphones. The brand has also ventured into the development of wireless multi-room Wi-Fi speakers, such as the HOME model, which combines quality sound with interior design aesthetics. Defunc’s commitment to functionality and style is further emphasised by collaborations with the likes of YouTuber Vanoss, fashion brand NA-KD and news agency Dagens Nyheter.
